When and how to enroll
General rules for buying a Medigap policy, and when your rights are strongest.
Who can buy Medigap
You need Medicare Part A and Part B. A Medigap policy covers one person, so spouses buy separate policies. You can't use a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Medigap Open Enrollment Period
A 6-month period that starts the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. During this time, insurers generally can't deny you a policy or charge more because of health conditions.
Guaranteed issue rights
In certain situations outside open enrollment, such as losing other coverage, you may have the right to buy specific Medigap policies without medical underwriting.
Under 65
Insurers aren't federally required to sell Medigap to people under 65, but some states require it. Options vary by state.
