Medicare Supplement Plans

How plan letters work

Medigap plans are standardized, so the same letter means the same basic benefits from any insurer.

What is Medigap?

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is extra insurance sold by private companies that can help pay some of the health care costs Original Medicare doesn't cover, like coinsurance, copayments and deductibles.

In most states, Medigap policies are standardized and identified by letter. Every plan with the same letter offers the same basic benefits, no matter which insurer sells it. Premiums can differ between insurers.

Plans C and F aren't available to people who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin standardize their policies differently.
